AGROPET polyester cable

Covering irrigation reservoirs with polyester mesh

AGROPET® is the polyester wire that replaces galvanized steel for covering irrigation reservoirs and ponds. The tensioned grid holds the mesh that curbs evaporation and algae, and being polyester it does not rust in water or with fertigation, nor degrade under the Levante sun.

Reservoir covers

The wire your irrigation reservoir needs

An irrigation reservoir loses water every day through evaporation and fills up with algae when the sun beats down on the water. Covering it with a tensioned mesh reduces this double problem, but the structure holding it works in constant contact with water, fertilizers and radiation.

AGROPET® is the high-tenacity polyester monofilament (PET wire) that forms this load-bearing grid: it tensions with the same tools as steel, ties by hand and does not rust or lose cross-section even when permanently wet and exposed to the sun.

  • Does not rust or corrode: immune to permanent water, fertigation and treatments; it does not stain the water or the waterproof liner.
  • UV-resistant: stabilized for years of direct sun on the reservoir without becoming brittle.
  • Dielectric: it does not conduct electricity; safer next to pumps, probes and the wiring of the irrigation system.
  • 5× lighter than steel: less effort and cost to cover large reservoir or pond surfaces.
  • Stable from −40 °C to +70 °C and tensioned with Gripple® and standard tensioners without cutting your hands.

The problem and the solution

Why cover the reservoir with polyester instead of steel

Evaporation

Water evaporates in the sun

In full sun, an uncovered reservoir loses water to evaporation every day. A mesh tensioned over the water reduces direct sun exposure and limits that loss.

Algae

Light triggers algae

The sun promotes algae growth, which fouls the water and clogs filters and drippers. Blocking the light with a cover curbs their proliferation.

Corrosion

Steel rusts in water

Galvanized wire or cable, always in contact with water and fertilizers, corrodes and stains. AGROPET® is 100 % immune to corrosion.

Durability

Sun and extreme temperatures

It resists UV and works from −40 to +70 °C without losing tension: it withstands the summers of the Levante and the southeast without degrading.

Recommended gauge

Which AGROPET® gauge for covering a reservoir

The gauge depends on the span between supports and the weight of the cover. The high gauges are used for the load-bearing lines and the intermediate ones for the secondary grid. We advise you according to the dimensions of your reservoir or pond.

GaugeRecommended use
5 mmMain load-bearing lines and large spans / ponds (breaking load 616 kg).
4 mmLoad-bearing grid for medium-sized reservoirs (breaking load 400 kg).
3 mmSecondary grid and mesh fixing (breaking load 360 kg).

Frequently asked questions

Covering irrigation reservoirs: frequently asked questions

What is the point of covering an irrigation reservoir with polyester mesh?
A cover tensioned over the reservoir limits direct sun exposure on the water: it reduces evaporation, curbs algae growth by blocking the light and keeps the water cleaner. AGROPET® wire forms the load-bearing grid that holds the cover without rusting.
Does polyester withstand water, fertilizers and chlorine?
Yes. AGROPET® is PET polyester monofilament: it does not rust or corrode with water, fertigation or treatments, unlike galvanized steel wire or cable.
Does it degrade in the sun in an open-field reservoir?
No. The monofilament is stabilized against UV radiation and works from −40 °C to +70 °C, keeping its strength and tension through years of continuous exposure to the sun of Murcia, Almería or the Levante.
What gauge of wire is used for a reservoir grid?
The high gauges are used for the main load-bearing lines, 4 mm (breaking 400 kg) and 5 mm (616 kg); for the secondary grid, 3 mm. We advise you according to the dimensions of your reservoir.
Is it suitable for large ponds and tanks?
Yes. Weighing about 5 times less than steel and tensioning with standard tools (Gripple®, tensioners), polyester makes it easier to cover large surfaces with less assembly effort and no rust points.
