AGROPET Trellis Cable for Kent Vineyards: A Polyester Alternative to Galvanised Wire

Across the North Downs and the Weald, growers fitting out new plantings are increasingly specifying Kent vineyard trellis cable in high-tenacity PET polyester monofilament, a rust-free replacement for galvanised steel wire on the fruiting and foliage wires that carry the canopy.

Why galvanised steel struggles in Kent's climate

Kent's maritime, high-rainfall climate keeps trellis wires damp for long stretches of the growing season, and the county's proximity to the Channel adds airborne salt to the equation. On galvanised steel that combination attacks the zinc coating; once it is breached, the underlying wire corrodes, weeps rust onto cordons and can stain fruit at harvest. Repeated copper- and sulphur-based plant-protection sprays, standard practice against powdery mildew and downy mildew in a damp season, only accelerate that electrochemical wear.

AGROPET polyester monofilament sidesteps the problem at source: it does not rust, so it will not stain cordons or fruit, and it is chemically unbothered by the sprays routinely applied in the vineyard. It is also dielectric (non-conductive), a genuine benefit where trellis rows run close to overhead lines or electrified deterrents.

The monofilament is roughly five times lighter than steel (density 1.36 g/cm³), which makes retrofitting long rows and hand-handling the reels far less punishing for the vineyard team. It is UV-resistant and dimensionally stable from −40 °C to +90 °C, comfortably covering a Kent winter frost through to the hottest exposed south-facing slope, with a melting point of 250 °C. Elongation at break is around 16 %, giving the wire some give in gusty conditions rather than the sudden snap of a corroded steel line.

It is tensioned to about 1 % using turnbuckles or Gripple® tensioners, and it can be knotted by hand where a quick repair or tie-off is needed, no crimping tool required. Choose the gauge to match your canopy loading and row length:

• 2.6 mm — breaking load 300 kgf
• 3 mm — breaking load 365 kgf
• 4 mm — breaking load 405 kgf
• 5 mm — breaking load 616 kgf

The cable is supplied in white and crystal, and it is recyclable at the end of its service life, in keeping with the sustainability commitments many Kent estates now build into their vineyard management.
