Rust-Free Vineyard Trellising for Sussex Sparkling Wine

Rust-free vineyard trellising is fast becoming a priority for Sussex sparkling wine growers, where a cool, damp maritime climate punishes galvanised steel wire year after year. AGROPET's high-tenacity PET polyester monofilament is a direct replacement for steel wire that simply does not corrode.

Why rust-free vineyard trellising matters in Sussex

Sussex sits on free-draining chalk downland, but the growing season here is wet, humid and often battered by salt-laden air off the Channel. These are exactly the conditions that attack the zinc coating on galvanised wire. Once that coating is scratched during installation or by the annual cycle of tensioning, the exposed steel begins to oxidise, staining the fruiting wires and shortening the working life of the whole trellis. On the vertical shoot positioning (VSP) systems used for Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier, a single failed cordon or catch wire means lost canopy support at a critical point in the season.

Disease pressure from downy and powdery mildew keeps Sussex vineyards on a tight plant-protection schedule. The copper, sulphur and wetting agents that pit and corrode steel have no such effect on inert PET. The monofilament is UV-resistant and dimensionally stable from −40 °C to +90 °C, with a melting point of 250 °C, so it holds up through frost, heat and the constant humidity of an English summer.

Choosing the right gauge

Match the cable to its role on the trellis. The published breaking loads are 2.6 mm → 300 kgf, 3 mm → 365 kgf, 4 mm → 405 kgf and 5 mm → 616 kgf, so heavier fruiting and cordon wires can be specified independently of the lighter catch wires. You can review the full range on our product page.
