What super high-density olive groves demand from a trellis

In a super high-density (SHD) planting, olives are trained as a continuous hedge along a support wire that carries the canopy and guides the over-the-row harvester. That wire sits outdoors for the entire life of the grove, exposed to blistering Mediterranean summers, coastal humidity and the repeated copper- and sulphur-based sprays used to protect olive trees. Galvanised steel copes poorly with this combination: once the zinc coating is scratched during tensioning or abraded by clips and ties, the exposed steel starts to corrode, and salt-laden coastal air only accelerates it. A rusting wire marks the fruit, loses strength at the worst possible moment, and is heavy and awkward to run across long rows.

AGROPET® is a high-tenacity PET polyester monofilament that replaces galvanised steel wire without the metal's weak points. It does not rust, so contact with irrigation water, coastal salt and plant-protection products leaves it unaffected. It is UV-resistant and dimensionally stable from −40 °C to +90 °C, comfortably beyond the range a sun-baked Mediterranean grove ever reaches, with a melting point of 250 °C. At roughly 1.36 g/cm³ it is about five times lighter than steel, so a single worker can pay out and position long spans with far less effort, and because it is dielectric it carries no electrical risk near pumps, perimeter fencing or overhead lines.

The cable is tensioned to around 1% elongation with standard turnbuckles or Gripple® connectors, and it can be knotted by hand, with no crimping tools or specialist skills required. With an elongation at break of about 16%, it absorbs wind loading and canopy movement rather than taking a permanent set. Match the gauge to your row length and canopy weight:
